Egyptian Jewelry and Its Enchanting History

Egyptian jewelry goes back through the ages to around 4000 BC during the period of the Badarians in Upper Egypt. From antique jewelry you can appreciate the importance placed by Egyptians on sacred objects like the scarab beetles which signified rebirth. Both the sexes wore jewelry for adornment, status or simply to ward off evil. Gold, copper, silver and their alloys, glass, precious stones, lapis lazuli, quartz and malachite were all extensively used by the ancient Egyptians in their bracelets, clasps, brooches, earrings and necklaces.

Today’s shops have used the ancient designs in excellent copies of antique jewelry. You can therefore order an attractive necklace in gilded sterling silver and garnet, red being the color symbolic of life. The fragrant blue lotus loved by the ancient Egyptian is crafted in a set of onyx earrings reminiscent of Nefertum the god of perfume and a locket symbolic of a predynastic figure is beautifully carved in sterling silver.

Russian Jewelry - Timeless Piece Of Adornment

The history of Russian jewelry is the story of the Royal Court of Czars, court intrigues, unimaginable wealth and a world at war. There are two major players in the timelessness of Russian jewelry. The first of these is Peter the Great who started the royal collection of jewelry around 1719 and to whom the world owes the very survival of the royal jewels.

The second player is Carl Faberge whose House was commissioned by Alexander III, the Czar of Imperial Russia, to craft the delicate Faberge eggs in gold, silver and precious and semi-precious jewels. These Faberge eggs have inspired the modern day online shops that have faithfully copied the fine workmanship in antique bracelets as in the Faberge bracelet with pastel eggs going back to the 19th/20th century in crystal and enamel. Also impressive is the bracelet with Viking Runes in sterling silver going back to the early Viking period around 750-800 AD.

European jewellery and style in the late middle age

European jewellery and style in the late middle age
European jewellery and style in the late middle age

The Middle Ages is a term that covers the time between the classical Greek-Roman world and the Renaissance, about 400 AD to 1500 AD, which is the time from the fall of the West Roman Empire to the rediscovery of the classical knowledge in the 15th century. In North Europe the Middle Age are thought to be starting with the end of the Viking Age about 1000 AD. The early Middle Ages, from 800 AD, when Charlemagne was crowned emperor of the West, to about 1200, saw the gradual emergence of a distinct European culture after the confusion of the so-called Dark Ages. From 1000 - 1200 a relative political and economical stability had been achieved. But still the jewellery design echoed those of the Byzantium. The pictures below visualize the difference between the closed, heavy, protective and monopolized city of the Northern Europe and the open, rich, elegant and affluent Byzantine culture in early The Middle Ages.

Historical Bracelets at museumjewellery.com

All parts of the human body have been adorned with jewelry since the dawn of times. Especially bracelets, brooches, necklaces and earrings. In the East also the nose, ankles, navel and over arms have been adorned.

Historical Bracelets have a peculiar history. For example they disappear from fashion in two hundred years from 1200 – 1400 AD in Central and Northern Europe. Because of Christianity only certain parts of the body could be allowed to be seen and gowns and shirts often covered the arms thereby hiding the wrists. Later in the 14th century the sleeves could be withdrawn and inviting this place of the body to be adorned with bracelets. But now the fashion took over the long abandoning of bracelets and their absent was now due to fashion rather that religion.

From 900 B.C. to 1900 AD Historical jewelry speaks to us and tells a story. Historical Bracelets is one study among many.

Antique necklaces – Turn on our world charm

Many wars and hostilities in Europe would cease if only people recognized that they share a common past. A past that not only includes differences and oppression of minorities , but also a common cultural heritage.

It is obvious that we share a development of technology, democracy and ideas. But cultural personalities and events are always claimed to belong to the nation from where they evolved. Nations claim the ownership of these writers, artists, composers and designers. The truth is that everybody lends inspiration from each other and all culture will mix and transform ideas and expressions.

We see this clearly in architecture and designs. What we for example see in the tiniest design like Antique Necklaces to great buildings like cathedrals are all inspired from trends that covers most European countries.

Design from the Etruscans, Greeks and Romans share elements, which we still find in jewelry today. The important influence is not particularly the designs in themselves but the transformation of a feeling, an interpretation and a style that turn on our world charm. We share this European aesthetic and Antique jewelry when we visit other parts of the world we recognize the belonging to our European history.
