Antique Jewelry - Trends Followed In Different Countries

Any piece of jewelry, which is 100 years old or more, is called antique jewelry. Such jewelry is more like a silent absorber of history, customs and beliefs. Etched into such historical jewellery is workmanship and design. A student of historical jewellery can easily assess the age of the piece and arrive at the period, which could be Georgian, Victorian, Art Deco or the Retro.

The characteristics of antique jewelry, which indicate the country of origin, are the function of the jewellery, the materials and alloys used as well as the combination of metals, which may have been used. Thus, the purity of silver is 925 parts to the 1000 in Britain, 950 in France, 800 in Germany and 830 in Denmark. Hallmarks have been used to define metal purity in various countries. The Christians, Buddhists, Jews, Hindus and the Muslims use precious stones for astrology in their jewellery.
