European jewellery and style in the late middle age

The Middle Ages is a term that covers the time between the classical Greek-Roman world and the Renaissance, about 400 AD to 1500 AD, which is the time from the fall of the West Roman Empire to the rediscovery of the classical knowledge in the 15th century. In North Europe the Middle Age are thought to be starting with the end of the Viking Age about 1000 AD. The early Middle Ages, from 800 AD, when Charlemagne was crowned emperor of the West, to about 1200, saw the gradual emergence of a distinct European culture after the confusion of the so-called Dark Ages. From 1000 - 1200 a relative political and economical stability had been achieved. But still the jewellery design echoed those of the Byzantium. The pictures below visualize the difference between the closed, heavy, protective and monopolized city of the Northern Europe and the open, rich, elegant and affluent Byzantine culture in early The Middle Ages.

The Cultural Impacts of Antique Jewelry

Antique jewelry endows their wearers with a distinct grace. The same uniqueness reasons their global popularity. Their value is not limited just to the embellishments. It is more about the antiquity and the representation of the era to which they belong. The museum jewelry occupies a place of pride in modern times, since they depict the signs of cultural influences of their respective ages.

Just like clothes, the cultural impact of antique jewelry is undeniable. During the era of abundance, jewelry easily used to became ostentatious exuding the sense of wealth and prosperity. However, during era of intellectualism and simplicity, jewelry, as easily, turned the minimalistic way, highlighting the spirit of austerity and frugality. Museum jewelry, however, is never short on sophistication and style. The themes used in jewelry act as great source of understanding and interpreting the beliefs and ideas of the bygone era.
